Urban Allegories

Sometimes art should not be pleasant. Sometimes art should require you to make eye contact.

Aberrant scribbles, elusive symbols and crude pictograms comprise the elements of a deceptive primitivism. In this case a language of the forgotten and overlooked. Existing in that space between desire and detritus, these paintings depict the spaces filled with people, reflecting the nadir of journeys mauled by time, and bountiful artifacts destined to hearth and home, denied to them. Acquired to bring joy—perhaps a child’s toy, or to share a meal with friends—exotic foods from a distant land, or may just a warm, cozy pair of socks to fight the chill of a rainy afternoon the ships are overfilled for those who don’t need more, and denied to those with not enough.

Passing with indifference precludes consideration. Exploring the overlooked and forgotten metropolitan and industrial settings renders indifference impossible, once seen there is no looking overlooking or forgetting their emerging aesthetic and it ever present role on our modern cities. Contrasting scales, shifting focal points invite the viewer to define their perspective and understanding of these scenes of feast and famine.
